“One cannot think well, love well. sleep well, if one has not dined well” – Virginia Woolf
Glorious day to you Dear Readers,
We ask so much of our bodies don’t we? Doesn’t it make sense to treat our bodies the very best we can in return? A fantastic way to jumpstart every day is with a super-charged, yummy and satisfying smoothie. Liquifying a whole big bunch of raw nutrition will give your body an injection of energy, well being and sustenance that will carry you through until lunch time.
When you make your own smoothies at home, you know exactly what’s gone into the preparation and can control unnecessary ingredients – mainly, the extra sugar load found in commercially prepared ‘to go’ smoothies.
…and it’s certainly more cost efficient.
In addition, you can tailor your daily smoothie to support a myriad of needs, be that weight loss, anti -inflammation or an antioxidant boost. There aren’t too many other ways to have a complete, quick and delicious meal that’s so full of raw, power-food. Add a scoop of your favorite protein powder for a boost of creaminess and extra protein. The protein powder will also ensure that you are full and satiated for 4 to 5 hours. Be sure to use protein powder that contains no added sugar and is non GMO to keep the goodness going.
Here’s a recipe for a smoothie I love. I call it my Garden of Life Smoothie.
I consider it essential to an awesome morning. Think glowing skin, healthy joints and stabilized blood sugar and blood pressure levels. Make this your 5 days a week breakfast. Spurge a little on the weekend and you are on your way to increased benefits in your health to sustain your Yoga practice/LIFE! It is full of protein via the almond milk, almond butter and protein powder scoop. Bursting with healthy dietary fiber, vitamins A,K,B2, B6, E and C from the spinach as well as several important minerals like calcium, potassium, iron, copper and magnesium. Yes, that’s just in the spinach! Pineapple is a great weight loss enhancer. It’s sweetness gives you a full and satisfied feeling while maintaining ideal blood sugar levels, because of the high fiber content. My favorite magic about pineapple is that it is a rich source of bromelain. T hat’s a super enzyme that can reduce inflammation from your sinuses to your joints. It’s also an excellent natural remedy for indigestion and inflammation related issues in the gut. Lastly I add a banana. This gives added creaminess, fiber and more heart smart potassium .
This recipe is also Vegan.
You will need a good quality blender. Having spent two decades around professional kitchens, I swear by ‘Vitamix’ brand blenders. They are definitely an investment initially, but you can go through several less expensive commercial blenders before you will ever need to replace your mighty Vitamix. I have the model that has a smoothie setting – super convenient and perfect every time. When people ask me when I started feeling better after West Nile Virus, it was definitely after we bought the Vitamix and I began having pulverized power in a glass 5 mornings out of 7. It’s been better than any medicine I had been prescribed. Just pure raw fruits and vegetables and added quality protein from a non meat source. Even if you don’t have a Vitamix, just use a good blender that is capable of liquifying raw fruit, vegetables and ice. The recipe below gives you 1 smoothie. You can double it easily in standard sized blenders for servings for 2. If you want to super-charge more amazing beings, don’t worry – it takes barely 3 minutes to make each serving. No need to add 2 bananas but do double everything else.
Garden of Life Smoothie
(I recommend putting the ingredients into the blender in the order listed for ease in blend-ability)
1/2 cup unsweetened Almond Milk
1 scoop of your favorite Protein Powder (use plain or vanilla flavored)
1 whole Banana
1/4 cup fresh Pineapple
1 tablespoon Almond Butter
1/2 cups fresh Spinach
1 cup Ice
Makes 10 to 12 ounces.
I love that Bikram Yoga Ivy City is in the same complex as Mom’s Organic Market. …and there is an amazing organic, healthy grocer diagonally across the street from Bikram Yoga Takoma Park. We really don’t have any excuse for lack of ingredients to make the good stuff!
The next time you complete your fantastic commitment to your body/temple with a Hot Yoga or Inferno Pilates class, or a rejuvenating Yoga Nidra class, make sure you are well stocked to jumpstart your morning the next day.
Appreciate your body. Thank it for carrying you through your days. We meditate for our minds, we exercise for our physical bodies – don’t skip quality nutrition. We need that to keep the other 2 working!
Cheers to your good health Readers!
